Cloud Online Databases

Why use Access instead of a web interface for an Azure SQL database

Building a web-based interface for a database is the seen as the obvious and best way to deliver a database application. However that are many drawbacks to using a browser and plenty of good reasons why Access is a better choice.

Here are 7 good reasons to use Access as the interface to an Azure SQL database rather than a web browser interface.

1. Superior User Interface Experience

Access offers many user interface features such as keyboard shortcuts, lookup combo lists and data validation. These make data entry much faster and more accurate than typical browser forms and mean that an interface can be developed to closely match the user’s requirements.

2. Tight Integration with other Office Apps

Access works seamlessly with Excel, Word and Outlook. This allows reports to be generated in Excel, mail-merges to be automated in Word or emails created in Outlook. This can’t be achieved using a browser-based interface.

3. Rich Reporting and Printing Capabilities

Access provides advanced, pixel-perfect reporting, including grouping and summaries which can be printed directly or saved to pdf.  These features are not available in most web applications or require third-party tools to replicate.

4. Familiar User Experience

Access already looks and feels like the other Microsoft Office applications so it’s easier for users to get familiar with a new database application.

5. Faster Development and Deployment

With Access, an interface can be developed without needing a web server, front-end framework or deployment pipeline which can save a great deal of development time and cost. Also you won’t need to worry about changes to web browsers requiring fixes to your application.

6. Lower Ongoing Costs

Once an Access front-end is set up, you don’t need to maintain servers or pay for additional web hosting. This makes Access a more affordable long-term solution.

7. Long Lifespan

Access is a core component of the Microsoft Office suite of applications. It’s already been around since 1992 and is likely to be supported for many years to come. Web development platforms have a much shorter lifespan.

With an Access interface to Azure SQL you can have a fully featured database and connect to it from anywhere without it costing you a fortune.
